How to Add Page Numbers, Covers and Bookmarks to PDFs
By the PDFPUMA team · Published · 1 min read
For page numbers, use the free Add page numbers tool: pick the format (1, Page 1, 1 of 9 or Page 1 of 9), position and starting number, and which pages to number. For a cover page and bookmarks, combine your files with Document assembly (Starter), which can also number the pages after the cover.
Add page numbers
- Open Add page numbers and add the PDF.
- Choose a format and one of six positions (top or bottom; left, centre or right).
- Set the number to start from, the size and the colour.
- To skip a cover, enter the pages to number — for example 2- numbers from page 2 to the end, and numbering counts only those pages.
- Download the numbered PDF.
Rotated pages are handled: numbers sit where the reader sees the bottom of the page, not where the page's internal coordinates say.
Add a cover, sections and bookmarks
Bookmarks are the clickable outline in a PDF reader's sidebar. Document assembly creates them for you while it combines your files:
- Open Document assembly and add your PDFs and images.
- Turn on Cover page and enter a title, subtitle and details line.
- Add section dividers and blank pages where you need them, and choose which pages to use from each file.
- Give each document a label — each label and section becomes a bookmark.
- Turn on Page numbers (after the cover) and build.
Need a contents page, a client logo on the cover and a footer on every page? That's the Agency Client pack builder.
Questions
Can I number pages in a language other than English?
The number formats are 1, Page 1, 1 of 9 and Page 1 of 9. The built-in fonts support Western European characters.
