How to split a PDF into documents automatically

  1. Add a PDF.
  2. Choose a rule — separator text, blank pages or every N pages — and review the proposed documents.
  3. Select Split, then download the ZIP.

About this tool

Scanned a stack of invoices, statements or forms into one PDF? Smart split finds the boundaries for you: a new document starts at each page that contains the text you choose (for example 'Tax invoice' or 'Statement of account'), after each blank separator page, or every set number of pages.

You always see the proposed documents before anything is exported, and you can add or remove split points by hand. Optionally name each file from text found on its first page — such as the word after 'Invoice number'.

Detection reads the text in each page. For scans without a text layer, run OCR PDF first, or use blank-page or page-count rules. PDFPUMA can't always find boundaries on its own, so check the preview.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to PDFPUMA?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser. Your files are read and processed on your device and the result is created there too — they are not sent to PDFPUMA's servers.

What if a boundary is wrong?

Add or remove split points in the preview before you export. Nothing is created until you choose Split.

Does it work on scans?

Blank-page and page-count rules work on any PDF. Text rules need a text layer — run OCR PDF first for scans.

Which plan includes Smart split?

Smart split PDF is included in Business and Agency.

Can I use password-protected PDFs?

Not with this tool yet. PDFPUMA doesn't bypass PDF passwords or permissions. If you own the file, remove the password in the app you used to protect it, then try again.
